Willoughby City Council has initiated a Sustainability Street programme with local communities. The objective is to get people together to learn about ecological sustainability and to implement initiatives in their communities to achieve a more ‘earth friendly’ environment now, and for future generations. The movement, founded in Victoria, was introduced into Willoughby in 2006. Willoughby Council has added Biodiversity and Bush-Friendly backyards to the core themes of Waste, Water and Energy. Castlecrag residents are active in the programme and the activities of our groups are covered in this area of the Website.
Castlecrag Sustainability Street This group got off to a flying start in 2006 with 25 residents attending a street afternoon tea. The Sugarloaf Sustainability Street group has now become Castlecrag Sustainability Street as a result of the folding of The Bulwark group. Rob Gibson of Willoughby City Council is the mentor for the group. Contact: Gay Spies 9958 8569 Meetings: Castlecrag Sustainability Street meets on the third Sunday of every month from 3.30pm to 5.30pm, in whichever house is offered for the occasion. Those attending are asked to bring a plate and the host/hostess provides tea and coffee. If required, Council can organise child care. News: The street trees (Eucalyptus gummifera) planted in Sugarloaf Crescent by the Sustainability Street group are doing well, with just one loss due to vandalism. Currently the group is working towards a Solar Hot Water Expo. Plans are also being developed to create a native garden at the entrance of Sugarloaf Crescent. |
